Fun at Avon Tyrrell

The first SOC junior training event was a great success. Thanks to Colin Hicks (SOC) and Kirsty Staunton (WIM), who planned some excellent courses, the session went very well. 23 juniors turned up, with 15 from SOC and the rest from WIM and SARUM.

The theme of the session was orientating the map and after a warm up, we split into two groups, the first doing a grid exercise, and the second doing a star exercise (running to a control and then coming back to the start, then setting off on another one). The grid exercise looked very interesting and was easy to set up. A grid was marked out with tape on the ground and control kites were placed at each of the junctions. The juniors then had to follow a course around the grid, rotating their maps as they went.

Second up was an orange or a white course, making use of the permanent controls, and to finish we had a relay. The winners were the A team, despite lots of shouting from team B, so they got first go at the chocolates!

Thanks again to Colin for doing most of the planning for the day. Look out for more SOC junior training in the next few months!

This event looks to have been fun. Hopefully there will be a few more over the next months.
